TAWAU: The ploy of a 17-year-old to use another registration number to avoid his motorcycle being repossesed for failing to pay the monthly instalment was arrested in a Commercial Vehicle Operation at Batu 4, Jalan Apas On Tuesday.
District Police Chief, ACP Jasmin Hussin said the boy was arrested by a team of officers and members of the The Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (BSPT) of IPD Tawau.
A check on the plate registration number using “Mobile Computerised On-Line Payment System’ (MCOPS) found that the Yamaha Legend he was riding did not match the plate number on display.
“The registration number used by the boy was registered to a Proton Saga car and he admitted that he had to change the plate number because he did not want it to be repossesed” he said.

Read more Jasmin said further investigation found that the boy did not have a licence. His motorcycle was confiscated for further investigation under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
Commenting further, he said, the action of the teenager clearly cause inconvenience to the vehicle owner who was a victim of ‘clone’ and would be burdened with various traffic offences he did not commit.
Meanwhile, in the operation from 9am to 11.30am led by ASP Jafri Abdul Hamid, BSPT issued 14 summons as the result of inspecting 98 vehicles during the roadblock.
Among the recorded offences, he said, include no driving licence, no insurance coverage, not complying the permit terms, using communication devices, cutting in line, not wearing seat belts and issues related to registration numbers.
Jasmin said, BSPT IPD Tawau will enhance its patrolling and monitoring efforts on main roads and locations where accidents frequently occur.
