LABUAN, Nov 23 (Bernama) — The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) is poised to take a proactive role in supporting the government’s digital transformation agenda, with a focus on promoting safe and responsible internet use.
Bernama Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin emphasised the agency’s capability to assist government agencies not only in disseminating news but also in educational initiatives and raising public awareness about navigating the digital world.
“Bernama can play a role in ensuring information related to the responsible use of the internet reaches the people.
“It is crucial for the public to understand how to navigate the digital landscape wisely and safely,” she told reporters after the launch of Labuan Connect! 2024 at Kampung Patau-Patau 1 here today.
Labuan Connect!, an initiative aimed at harnessing the transformative power of technology to bridge digital divides, foster innovation and empower local communities in Labuan to thrive in the digital era, was launched Ministry of Communications deputy secretary-general (Strategic Communications and Creative Industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin.
Nur-ul Afida highlighted the pressing need to address online threats such as cyberbullying, paedophilia, and scams, which have become significant challenges in the digital era.
“This effort aligns with the agenda of the Ministry of Communications and its agencies, which prioritise educating the public about these issues,” she said.
Nur-ul Afida underscored that the digital era requires a concerted effort to foster a safe and informed online environment, where individuals, particularly from vulnerable groups, can use the internet without fear of exploitation or harm.
She added that Bernama could assist government bodies to disseminate accurate and impactful messages, ensuring the public has access to essential knowledge for navigating the digital world.
