KOTA KINABALU (July 15): The Institute of Geology Malaysia (IGM) Sabah Chapter paid a courtesy visit to the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch at its office in Damai Point Commercial Centre on Monday morning. The meeting marked a significant step toward strengthening collaboration between two of Malaysia’s key professional institutions in engineering and geology.
The IGM Sabah Chapter delegation was led by chairman Prof. Ts. Gr. Dr Rodeano bin Roslee, accompanied by vice chairman Dr. A. Khairut Termizi, Lee Kiun You, Rollix and Khairee Saad, all representing the industry and professionalism section.
Welcoming the delegation were IEM Sabah Branch chairman Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob bin Hj Jaafar, vice chairman 1 Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, vice chairman 2 Ir. Paul Yap, honorary treasurer Ir. Jack Wong, past chairman Ir. CC Lo and Sofea Ruzalie, a representative from the Young Engineers Section (YES).
The meeting served as a platform for IGM Sabah Chapter to introduce its institutional background, strategic goals, and ongoing initiatives in advancing the geological profession across Malaysia particularly in Sabah.
Emphasis was placed on the growing need for synergy between geologists and engineers, particularly in addressing contemporary issues such as climate resilience, geological stability assessment and seismic hazard assessment, natural resource development, and environmental sustainability.
Both institutions explored avenues for collaboration including: Joint technical seminars and training; knowledge sharing on geological hazards and mitigation; engagement in public awareness initiatives on geology and engineering safety; and supporting the professional development of young engineers and geoscientists.
Yaakob expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed IEM Sabah’s commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration for the betterment of the profession and the community. “Sabah, with its complex geological landscape, stands to benefit greatly from closer ties between geologists and engineers,” he said.
Rodeano echoed this sentiment, noting that effective engineering solutions must be informed by sound geological understanding. He emphasized IGM Sabah chapter’s readiness to work together with IEM Sabah on impactful projects and community-based programs.
This courtesy call reflects a shared vision between IGM Sabah Chapter and IEM Sabah – to strengthen professional synergy, promote public safety, and drive sustainable development through integrated expertise.
