KENINGAU: Two siblings, aged two years and two months, are feared drowned after they were swept away by floodwaters in Kampung Dalit, Sook, near here, on Tuesday.
Keningau District Police Chief Supt Yampil Garai said the incident occurred around 5pm.
“The two were carried away by floodwaters that inundated their home. Seven individuals were swept away by the floodwaters, but five were rescued, while the other two remain missing,” he said.
He said their parents tried to save both but were unsuccessful due to the strong currents, adding the father and mother also sustained injuries.
Yampil said the plantation company has three blocks of workers’ quarters of nine units each.
He added that the victims’ parents were currently being treated at Keningau District Hospital.
The Fire Department received an emergency call about the incident at 10.06pm, after which a team from the Sook and Keningau fire stations rushed to the location, approximately 110km away.
“The search and rescue (SAR) operation for the victims is ongoing,” it said in a statement, adding firefighters from Keningau are at the location to gather information on the victims.
