KIULU (Nov 28): Kiulu has the potential to become a health-friendly tourism destination by leveraging its natural beauty and the support of the local community, said Kiulu Assemblyman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
He described Kiulu as a destination for “tourism with a heart,” where tourism not only promotes natural beauty but also provides health benefits to both visitors and locals.
“Kiulu has a strong sense of belonging and community spirit. We can promote tourism that brings holistic benefits to everyone,” said Joniston, who is also the Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister.
He made these remarks during the closing ceremony of a Dementia and Alzheimer’s Awareness Talk held in conjunction with Welfare Month at the Kiulu Community Hall today.
Emphasising the importance of awareness about these diseases, Joniston highlighted the role of small communities like Kiulu in supporting individuals living with conditions such as dementia.
“With its close-knit social structure, Kiulu can serve as an example of how small communities can play a significant role in providing support to patients and their families.
“Additionally, the use of natural therapy, such as the serene atmosphere and scenic landscapes of Kiulu, along with traditional activities like farming and handicrafts, can serve as supportive elements for patients,” he added.
The awareness programme, organized by the Sabah Alzheimer’s Disease Support Association in collaboration with the local community, featured talks and information-sharing sessions on symptoms, prevention, and support for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients.
Joniston stated that the programme equips Kiulu residents with vital information, enabling them to identify early signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s while providing moral, physical, and social support in line with Kiulu’s values of unity and community strength.
The programme was also attended by the Founder of the Sabah Alzheimer’s Disease Support Association, Datuk Zahra Ismail; Deputy President of the association, Venitia Lojuti; and Community Development Leader for N.15 Kiulu, Golubi Guntarek.
