KOTA KINABALU (Sept 22): MCA President Datuk Seri Wee Kah Siong is impressed with the loyalty and support of its members in Sabah.
Speaking to the media after officiating MCA Sabah’s annual general meeting here on Sunday, he said that despite losing in the election, the members remained mostly intact with only one or two leaving the party.
“We hear of party hopping in Sabah, some jumping from party to party, but that is not the case with MCA Sabah. There are a few who left the party but not many are prominent figures who did not lead many to join them.
“These people may have their own intention so it is ok, they can go. What is important to me is that the party remains intact and we have a division in all 25 parliamentary constituencies in Sabah.
“MCA is a structured party like Umno and we have a very good organisational setup,” he said.
When asked about seats allocation for the coming 17th state election, Wee said that MCA Sabah had discussed the matter with Umno Sabah.
It is an ongoing internal discussion and needs to be further discussed among Barisan Nasional (BN) Sabah members.
“It may be too early (to talk about this) but we are prepared (for the election) and will do the best we can as the political scenario after the 16th state election is very different. I will leave it to BN Sabah.
“Sabah has been given autonomy whether it is Umno, MCA, or other parties because they know what is happening in the state. Sabah is a showcase of the multi-ethnic society where we have a very diverse racial composition of Muslim Bumiputera and non-Muslim Bumiputera, Chinese, Kadazan, and all different races.
“Sabah is very unique even the coffee shop culture is very different. Sabahans know how important it is to have unity so let us work out the formula. Even though it’s a Chinese party, MCA has already started recruiting affiliate members.
“In Sabah, we have about 100 affiliate members which is good, because we need people to join forces since they have confidence in our party, and let us work together,” he said.
To the question of possible cooperation between PH and BN in the coming state election, Wee said that it is too early to say anything.
