KOTA KINABALU, Nov 15 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two civil servants suspected of soliciting and accepting bribes of RM130,000 from several contractors involved in school toilet upgrading and maintenance projects in the state.
According to sources, the male suspects, both in their 50s, were arrested at the Sabah MACC office here between 7 pm and 10 pm yesterday.
The suspects allegedly committed the offence last year, demanding a bribe amounting to 30 per cent of the project value. They are suspected of receiving cash from the contractors with multiple payments made over time.
The sources also said that MACC seized approximately RM90,000 in cash and two luxury vehicles allegedly purchased using the bribe money.
Sabah MACC director Datuk S Karunanithy, who confirmed the arrest when contacted, said that one suspect has been remanded for six days starting today, and another is expected to be released after providing his statement.
Karunanithy said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. He did not rule out the possibility of making more arrests to assist in the investigation.
