PENAMPANG, Nov 13 (Bernama) – Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick distributed canopies to 434 petty traders and hawkers at the Tamu Donggongon market here today.
The Member of Parliament for Penampang hopes that the canopies, valued at approximately RM66,000, will benefit the traders to continue their business activities at the new site while the upgrading works of Tamu Donggongon are carried out.
He said that all the traders, who previously conducted their businesses at Tamu Donggongon, have been temporarily relocated to the site near the Datuk Peter Mojuntin Memorial.
“I hope the Tamu Donggongon upgrading project can be completed as scheduled so that these traders can return to the market with better and more comfortable facilities,” he reporters after the canopy handover ceremony to representatives of the hawkers and petty traders of the market.
Ewon said that the redevelopment cost for Tamu Donggongon involves an allocation of RM8.5 million, and he wants the upgrading works to be completed within the stipulated time frame.
Meanwhile, he hoped that the Penampang District Council will consider reducing parking fees in the Penampang area to alleviate the burden on users, especially the Tamu Donggongon traders.
“With this relocation, traffic congestion (in parking areas) will inevitably occur. We wish to hear from all parties, but at the same time, I support the district council in seeking new sources of revenue besides parking fees,” he said.
