SANDAKAN: The advancement of the Sabah Pan Borneo Highway project is notably lagging when compared to the progress made in Sarawak.
Vivian Wong Shir Yee, the Member of Parliament for Sandakan, emphasised the necessity of regular updates regarding the project’s status.
During the debate on the Supply Bill 2025 for the Ministry of Works in Parliament, Vivian enquired about the current status of Packages 28, 29, and 30, which span from Batu 32 Sandakan to Sungai Baoto, as well as the anticipated completion dates for these packages.
Additionally, she sought information from the minister regarding the expected completion timelines for Phase 1A and Phase 1B of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah.
“While we are eager to see this project finalised promptly, it is equally crucial to ensure that the quality of the work adheres to the established standards and is not compromised,” she stated.
In the meantime, Vivian expressed his frustration over the delay in several slope repair projects in Sandakan.
This includes Jalan Lalang, where a minor landslide has occurred, leading to the closure of the road shoulder.
“Despite nearly two years passing, repairs have yet to commence, resulting in half of the road surface collapsing.
“The second slope failure is located on Bukit Road near Taman Sentosa Apartments.
“Initially a minor issue, the slope failure has worsened over the past year.
“However, no repair work has started yet,” she noted.
“Whenever I follow up with the Public Works Department (JKR) about the status, the response consistently indicates that the engineering study report has been completed and submitted and is now awaiting approval from headquarters,” she explained.
