KOTA KINABALU, Nov 21 (Bernama) — The Sabah State Legislative Assembly sitting today elected Sabah Rubber Industry Board chairman Datuk Edward Linggu as a member of the Senate to represent the state of Sabah.
Linggu, 65, who is also Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) secretary-general, replaces Senator Datuk Noraini Idris, whose term of service ends on Dec 9.
Linggu was elected to the position effective on Dec 10 for a three-year term.
Earlier, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor proposed Linggu, who was the sole candidate for the post, and was supported by Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.
Sabah Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya then announced that Linggu was elected after obtaining a majority vote from 53 assemblymen while another 26 members were not present during the voting.
The Sabah state assembly has a total of 73 assemblymen who are elected through election and six assemblymen are appointed.
Linggu from the Dusun ethnic group comes from Tamparuli, and was a Tamparuli assemblyman for one term in 1999 as well as the former chairman of Sabah Credit Corporation.
Kadzim then adjourned the meeting to a date to be determined later.
