KOTA KINABALU, Oct 9 (Bernama) — Keningau Vocational College student Elisha Carmen Erick won the gold award in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2024 with her composition titled “A Letter to the Prime Minister”.
College director Nordin Akup said in a statement today that the second-year construction technology student received the result and achievement certificate via e-mail on Sept 26.
In the competition, Nordin said, Elisha wrote an essay in the form of a letter pleading with the national leader to resolve the issue of stateless children, which is an increasingly troubling issue, especially in Sabah.
He said Elisha also commented that the situation caused the children to face difficulty in obtaining formal education, resulting in their chances of changing their fortunes becoming slim.
Elisha, he said, was thrilled to bits with her achievement as she is someone who loves to express her feelings through writing and even published her first editorial in an education magazine a few months ago.
Nordin also congratulated Elisha and hoped that her achievement would spur other students to diligently delve deeper into writing and journalism, thus sharpening their thinking and language skills.
The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition, organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS), which is based in London, England, has been held every year since 1883 and is open to school students worldwide.
