KOTA KINABALU (Oct 25): Angela Rusli, a final-year student in Bakery and Pastry at Keningau Vocational College (KVC), Sabah, was awarded overall champion and a gold medal in the English essay writing category for the secondary school category in the International Children and Youth Essay Writing Challenge Competition.
The contest was organized by the Asia Pacific Children and Youth Talent Association that is based in Hong Kong.
The results of the competition were announced on October 22 through the organizer’s website and email notification.
Angela wrote an essay titled “Falling Short Today to Rise Higher for a Better Tomorrow,” based on one of the three themes for the English category which required entrants to write a speech to a sports team who lost in the final match of a sports team championship.
In her essay, Angela emphasized that the team’s spirit and commitment throughout the training and up to the final match was an achievement that should be appreciated and celebrated. She also explained that a loss should not be seen as a failure for the team but rather as motivation for them to continue their journey in the discipline they have chosen to specialize in.
As one of the key players of her college’s netball team, which has competed in various tournaments, Angela drew inspiration for the essay from her experience playing in numerous matches alongside her teammates.
The college director, Nordin bin Akup, congratulated the student on this achievement. He stated that Angela’s win shows that vocational students have great potential in English essay writing and this underscores the importance for vocational college students to master both English language and writing skills.
