KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has been experiencing strong winds and heavy rain over the past few days, resulting in uprooted trees and roofs being blown off buildings.
On Wednesday afternoon, the highest cross at Sacred Heart Church in Kampung Tajau, Kudat, was toppled by powerful winds.
Fortunately, no one was injured as there was no church service at the time; however, the front part of the church sustained damage.
According to Amirzudi Hashim, the director of the Sabah Meteorological Department, the current weather conditions are attributed to wind patterns originating from the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia and the west coast of Sabah.
Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and occasional strong winds characterise the ongoing monsoon season.
These conditions are also expected to lead to rough seas and choppy waters in the southern Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea, including Sabah’s waters.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a Category 2 warning for strong winds and rough seas affecting Sabah’s west coast, particularly southeast of Reef North and Layang-Layang, from September 17 to 21.
Winds are anticipated to reach speeds of 50 to 60 km/h, with waves potentially reaching heights of up to 4.5 meters. These conditions risk coastal activities, shipping, fishing, and ferry services.
“The public is urged to stay informed about the weather conditions and to follow the advisories issued by MetMalaysia to avoid any incidents,” Amirzudi stated.
